When the Public Helps Science: Crowdsourcing in Digitization

The digitization of cultural heritage is one of the processes that has fundamentally transformed the way we work with historical sources. Millions of digitized documents, images, and maps are now available online, yet their true potential often remains untapped. Digitization does not end with the creation of a digital copy; further data processing, such as transcriptions or annotations, is often key. It is precisely at this point that crowdsourcing comes to the fore, meaning the involvement of the public in professional practice, often associated with so-called citizen science.
