We present a summary of the second edition of the conference Digital Data from the Perspective of a Humanities Researcher.
For the third year, the participants of the online conference Digital Data from the Perspective of a Humanities Researcher had the opportunity to listen to presentations by experts and researchers from a number of fields in the humanities. The conference, which took place on Tuesday 29 November 2022, once again offered a space for sharing knowledge and experiences. Ways of working with digital data, new platforms and tools were presented. The conference also included a practical workshop where participants had the opportunity to learn how to work with a specific tool. In addition to academics and students from Masaryk University, we could virtually welcome visitors from other institutions and organizations. Here is a summary of the individual presentations, including links to their recordings.
Tomas Glomb presented his research based on analyzing the reverse side of Roman Empire coins. He used several available databases and looked for correlations in the data between political sentiment in the empire and the frequency of depictions of specific deities on coins. In his paper, he presents the questions this approach to research allowed him to ask.
The paper by the authors (Michal Lorenz and Josef Schwarz) illustrated the possibilities of using the Faculty of Masaryk University's Digital Library and described the approaches and issues that had to be addressed during the migration to the new system. The FF MU DK is available at digilib.phil.muni.cz.
Hana Žižková presented a new web tool that allows proofreading of Czech written text. In her presentation she gave illustrative examples, but also presented the problems and intricacies of the Czech language rules that had to be solved during the development. The tool is available at www.opravidlo.cz.
At the last lecture, František Svoboda spoke about the Patterns of Beauty project, which dealt with the digitisation and processing of historical textiles. This is a unique project with many applications, one of them is the Beauty patterns platform, which is part of the faculty infrastructure Digitalia MUNI ARTS.
A total of three posters were presented in the afternoon session of the conference. Participants could debate the posters with the presenters in separate virtual rooms.
This poster presents an ongoing interdisciplinary project aimed at testing the research possibilities and the chosen methodology for studying Brno's semi-professional amateur theatre activities.
This poster presents a methodology for statistical analysis of available research articles dealing with children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder. It is the first application of such an approach in the Czech psychological environment.
This poster presents ongoing research of available textual records that highlight the specifics of Czech psychology during this time period. The research uses the analysis of digitized archival materials and authorized interviews with personalities of Czech psychology.
During the afternoon workshop, Jiří Milička and Dominika Kovaříková presented the possibilities of using the potential of the Czech National Corpus with the KonText tool. They also presented other associated tools that can help us or clarify questions. The workshop was conducted in a hybrid way so that the participants could try out the maximum number of functions themselves.
We would like to thank all the speakers and participants and look forward to future similar meetings.
